The Daily Hadiths: 1st Hadith

1st Hadith

عن أمِيْرِ المُؤْمِنِيْنَ أبِيْ حَفْصٍ عُمَرَ بْنِ الخَطَّاب رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ ا للهِ
صلى الله عليه وسلم یَقُولُ: (( إِنَّمَا الأَعْمَالُ بِالنِّيَّاتِ وَإِنَّمَا لِكُلِّ امْرِئٍ مَا نَوَى فَمَنْ آَانَ تْ
هِجْرَتُهُ إِلىَ اللهِ وَرَسُولِهِ فَهِجْرَتُهُ إلى اللهِ ورَسُولِهِ وَمَنْ آَانَتْ هِجْرَتُهُ لِدُنْيَا یُصِيْبُهَا أَوِ امْرَأَ ةٍ
یَنْكِحُهَا فَهِجْرَتُهُ إِلَى مَا هَاجَرَ إِلَيْهِ)) . رواه إماما الحدثين أبو عبد الله محمد بن إسماعيل بن
إبراهيم بن المغيرة بن بردزیة البخاري، وأبو الحسين مسلم بن الحجاج بن مسلم القشيري

It is narrated on the authority of Amirul Mu'minin, Abu Hafs 'Umar bin al-Khattab, radiyallahu 'anhu, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, sallallahu 'alayhi wasallam, say: 
"Actions are (judged) by motives (niyyah), so each man will have what he intended. Thus, he whose migration (hijrah) was to Allah and His Messenger, his migration is to Allah and His Messenger; but he whose migration was for some worldly thing he might gain, or for a wife he might marry, his migration is to that for which he migrated."

This Hadith is consider as one of the main hadith in Islam

The main ideas of discussion for this hadith :
1) The story of the hadith - The story of the migration of Ummu Qais

2) The Importance of our motive  :
To differentiate between Ibadah and custom.
To determine qasad amal - is it for Allah or otherwise.

3) The Islamic law of expressing our motive(jahr) - bid’ah mungkarah :
It is not proven in Quran or Sunnah - (the ibadah is consider haram unless there are some proper argument for it) - fuqaha’ Syafie : sunnat.
It is consider haram if jahr with motive that can disturb other people (solat).

4) The effect of good motive to things that are consider as harus :
It is counted as qurbah (Close to Allah), and we will be rewarded for it.
Foods and drinks - with the motive of being loyal/ providing sustenance - (The right of wife/children)
jima’@ The intimacy with your wife - Is consider as a form of ibadah (The right for a wife).

5) Steps on how things that is Harus can change into Qurbah:
An outside perspective of things that are harus cannot be consider as qurbah. For Example- Standing under the heat of the sun …..(The hadith about a man nazar)
Things that are mubah as wasilah to ibadah.
Considering it as tasyri’ ilahi - having confidence that it is harus/
Not in exaggeration/ fulfilling the syariat.
Considering it as juz’ie - It must not be prolonged to the extend of damaging our self- for example is not eating anything which is consider as sinful.

Lessons that can be taken from the hadith:
  • Motive or intention is the core of every practice(amalan). A good practice must be accompanied with a good motive .
  • Good or bad practice that is not conduct according to the order of syara', it would not bring you any good even if it is being done with a good motive. The same goes to a good practice that is not being done because of Allah s.w.t, such as riya', showing of  or doing it some worldly intention.
  • Ulama used to say: A small practice can turn into big due to our motive and so is a big practice into a smaller one because of our motive. Every practice will be determine base on the motive of the doer.
  • Hijrah is one of the most important event in Isalm where the follower of Islam has being order to migrate. Who ever perform hijrah because of Allah abd his prophet, he will be given a huge reward, on the other hand if it is because of some worldly matter or women, they will get what they wanted.
  • Even though the real hijrah had past, the hijrah with the mean of abandoning vice (maksiat) into performing good deeds, is also consider as a hijrah which will be given a huge reward.
